INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar is leading a delegation to Malaysia Jan. 15-18. There, he will celebrate existing relationships and explore new collaborations that align IUPUI's international-outreach strategies with Malaysia's ambitious goals for higher education.
IUPUI interactions with higher education in Malaysia date to the mid-1990s, when Paydar first visited Malaysia to discuss a new university there, Universiti Tenaga Nasional. IUPUI assisted in building UNITEN's academic infrastructure and participated in its launch. UNITEN is now a thriving center of engineering and business education, and on this return trip to Malaysia, Paydar will meet with UNITEN leaders as well as UNITEN students who will earn Purdue University's B.S. degree at IUPUI.
The IUPUI delegation will also meet with officials from other institutions of higher education -- Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka -- as well as from Yayasan Tenaga Nasional, a scholarship and loan program, and Majlis Amanah Rakyat, or MARA, a Malaysian government agency formed to educate bumiputra (Malays and other indigenous Malaysians) in the areas of business and industry. Ministers of higher education and of community college and polytechnic education will also confer with the IUPUI representatives.
Paydar will host gatherings with IUPUI and IU alumni to share university updates and learn about the progress graduates have made since their return to Malaysia.
In addition to Paydar, the IUPUI delegation includes:
- Gil Latz, associate vice chancellor for international affairs and professor of geography, IUPUI; associate vice president for international affairs, Office of the Vice President for International Affairs, and affiliated philanthropic studies faculty member, Indiana University
- David Russomanno, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI and professor of electrical and computer engineering
- Tim Diemer, director of international services and clinical assistant professor of organizational leadership at the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI
- Becky Wood, assistant to the chancellor for communications, IUPUI
